What is 1000 Broadway?
1000 Broadway is a large building in the city of Portland. It stands 88 meters (about 289 feet) tall. The building is mostly used for offices. It was finished in 1991.
Design and Nickname
The building has a special look. Its roof has rings that form a dome shape. This unique design made people think of a roll-on deodorant bottle. That's how it got its funny nickname, "The Ban Roll-on Building."
The company that designed the building was called Broome, Oringdulph, O'Toole, Rudolph, and Associates. A local developer named Tom Moyer helped build it. The project cost about $90 million.
Building History
Before 1000 Broadway was built, an old movie theater stood on the same spot. It was called the Broadway Theater. This old theater had a special art deco style.
When the new building was planned, there were ideas to save parts of the old theater. However, those plans did not happen. Instead, a new movie theater was built inside the 1000 Broadway building.
The Movie Theater Inside
The new movie theater had four screens. It first opened with a company called Act III Theaters. This company was started by Tom Moyer, the same person who developed the building.
Later, in 1998, a bigger company called Regal Cinemas bought all the Act III theaters. Regal Cinemas kept the theater at 1000 Broadway open for many years. However, in September 2011, the movie theater inside 1000 Broadway closed its doors.
