How Did 101 Federal Street Come to Be?
The story of 101 Federal Street begins with an older building called the State Street Trust Building. This older part, known as 75 Federal Street, was built in 1929. It was designed by Thomas M. James in the popular Art Deco style of that time.
In the late 1980s, the city's planning group, the Boston Redevelopment Authority, made a big change. They allowed some smaller streets to be removed. This helped create larger areas for new buildings. Because of this, an L-shaped piece of land became available. This new space was perfect for building the modern 101 Federal Street.
What Does 101 Federal Street Look Like?
The building at 101 Federal Street is made of three tall sections. These sections look like they have a crown on top, with parts that stick up like the walls of an old castle. This style is called "crenellated." These three sections are connected to the older 75 Federal Street building on the first eleven floors. The outside of the building is covered in light-colored limestone. This stone was chosen to match the color of the older 75 Federal Street building.
Details of 75 Federal Street's Design
The older 75 Federal Street building has 21 floors. Its outside walls feature detailed carvings of people and plants. These carvings are not very deep, which is why they are called "low relief." You can also see bronze sculptures on the outside. These sculptures show different themes like finance (money), architecture (building design), agriculture (farming), power, and transportation.
Inside, the lobby of 75 Federal Street is designed in the Art Deco style. The floor is made of black and light brown terrazzo with marble designs. The walls and columns are covered in dark green and red marble. There are also fancy bronze decorations. Even the elevator doors match the marble, and the elevator buttons have a special engraved style.
