10 Admiral Grove is a house in Dingle, Liverpool, England. This house was home to Ringo Starr for twenty years. He lived here before he became famous with the Beatles.

Ringo's first school, St. Silas Primary School, was very close by. Ringo was often sick as a child. Because of this, he learned to read and write at home. When he was seven, he spent a lot of time in the Royal Children’s Hospital. This was due to a serious illness.

When Ringo was 13, his mother Elsie married Harry Graves. The local pub, The Empress, was next to Admiral Grove. Elsie worked there as a barmaid. This pub became famous in 1970. It was shown on the cover of Ringo's first solo album, Sentimental Journey.

During the time of "Beatlemania", a TV show called The Mersey Sound was filmed. It showed Ringo being surrounded by fans on Admiral Grove. He was trying to get to George Harrison's sports car.

Ringo Starr's First Home

Ringo Starr was born Richard Starkey on July 7, 1940. He was born at 9 Madryn Street in the Dingle area of Liverpool. This neighborhood was badly damaged during the Second World War by bombs.

His parents, Richard and Elsie, rented the house at 9 Madryn Street. It cost 10 shillings (about £0.50) a week. Ringo's parents separated when he was three years old. Elsie and Ringo then moved to a smaller house. This was the house at 10 Admiral Grove. It was a "two-up two-down" house, meaning it had two rooms upstairs and two downstairs. Ringo lived here until 1963, when he became a worldwide star.

Saving Ringo's Birthplace

In 2010, there were plans to tear down Ringo's birthplace at 9 Madryn Street. Local groups wanted to save it. The city had to board up the house. This was because people were stealing bricks as souvenirs. An online request to save the house gathered almost 4,000 signatures. People wanted the National Trust to protect it.

In 2012, a government minister said the house would be saved. In 2013, it was announced that local people supported a plan to fix up 9 Madryn Street. However, the government later decided to hold a public meeting to discuss the plans further.

Ringo Starr himself said in The Beatles Anthology: "I don’t remember the inside of our house in Madryn Street, I was a baby." But he did remember his grandparents' house, which was also on Madryn Street.

Ringo's Lasting Connection

After Ringo became famous, he bought a new house for his mother Elsie and stepfather Harry. It was in the Gateacre area of Liverpool. They moved there from Admiral Grove.

Ringo remembered both his childhood homes in a song. In 2008, he released a song called "Liverpool 8". It paid tribute to his old addresses.

In 2016, a fan of the Beatles bought the house at 10 Admiral Grove. This fan also owns other houses connected to the Beatles. These include a house once owned by George Harrison and one where John Lennon's mother, Julia, lived.
