1340 facts for kids
The year 1340 was an important time in Europe, with big changes happening in politics and major battles fought at sea. Around this time, Europe was home to many people, and kings were making big moves to expand their power.
Big Events in Europe
In 1340, Europe had about 74 million people living across its many countries. This was a time when kingdoms were growing and leaders were often in conflict over land and power.
Kings and Kingdoms
A major political event happened on January 26, 1340. King Edward III of England made a bold claim: he declared himself the King of France. This was a huge deal because it meant England and France were now in a direct fight over who should rule France. This claim was one of the reasons for the long-running conflict known as the Hundred Years' War.
Another important change in leadership happened in Denmark. After eight years without a king, a period called an Interregnum, the people finally chose a new ruler. This new king was a son of the previous king, Christopher II of Denmark. He was elected to the throne and began his reign as Valdemar IV of Denmark.
A Huge Sea Battle
One of the most significant events of 1340 was the Battle of Sluys, which took place on June 24. This was a massive sea battle fought between the navies of the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of France.
The English fleet was led by King Edward III of England himself. The French fleet was commanded by two admirals, Hue Quiéret and Nicolas Béhuchet. They also had help from skilled sailors from Genoa, who were mercenaries (soldiers hired to fight for money) and sailed powerful ships called galleys. These Genoese mercenaries were led by Egidio Bocanegra.
The battle was incredibly fierce. In the end, the English won a huge victory. The French fleet was almost completely destroyed. Sadly, both of the French commanders, Hue Quiéret and Nicolas Béhuchet, were killed during the battle. However, the Genoese mercenaries managed to escape with their lives and ships. This battle was a major win for England and showed their strength at sea.
