The 1440 Canal building is a tall office building in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is also known as the Tidewater Building or Tidewater Place. This building stands at 1440 Canal Street. It is located in the Medical District of the city's main business area.
The building is 24 stories tall. It reaches about 288 feet (88 m) into the sky. It was designed by a company called Kessels-Diboll-Kessels. There are also two smaller floors, the 25th and 26th, but you can only get to them from the 24th floor.

A Bit of History
The 1440 Canal building was finished in 1971. It was first built to be the main office for a company called Tidewater Marine. This company works with boats and ships.
In 1993, Tidewater Inc. gave the building to Tulane University. Now, the building is home to the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. This school teaches students about health and diseases. Other Tulane University offices are also in the building. When Tulane took over, they changed all the signs. The new signs say "Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine."
Radio Station on Top
Did you know a radio station broadcasts from the top of the building? WWOZ is a famous New Orleans radio station. Its antenna and transmitter are on the roof of 1440 Canal. This helps them send their music and shows across the city.
Surviving Hurricane Katrina
In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. The city experienced a lot of flooding. The 1440 Canal building had about four feet of water on its ground floor. This was a big challenge for the building.
But the building was repaired quickly. People started moving back into the building in November 2005. By January 2006, the building was fully open again. It was a sign of New Orleans' strength.
