18-20a Munn Street is a group of historic homes in Millers Point, a suburb of Sydney, Australia. These homes are called "terrace houses" because they are built in a row, sharing side walls. They are special because they are "heritage-listed," meaning they are important to history and are protected.

About These Historic Homes

A Look Back in Time

Millers Point is one of the oldest places where European people settled in Australia. It was also a very busy area for ships and sea activities.

These homes were built around 1911. They are in a style called "Federation style," which was popular in Australia at that time.

Originally, there were six of these homes. However, some of them were knocked down to make more space for the port at Darling Harbour. This means the harbor needed to expand for bigger ships and more trade.

Since 1986, people have been able to rent these homes from the NSW Department of Housing, which is a government group.

What Do They Look Like?

This group has four homes. Some are on the ground floor, and others are upstairs. They fit in very well with the nearby Palisade Hotel.

The main doors to these homes are on the south side. You can reach them from a shared walkway that runs along a verandah (a covered porch). There are also small yards on the side, facing Bettington Street.

You might notice the beautiful decorations on these homes. They have fancy "Art Nouveau" designs made from metal, called fretwork, and decorative cast iron fences.

The houses are made of brick with special sandstone around the doors and windows. They also have a two-story verandah with wooden railings.

Why Are They Important?

These homes are part of the Millers Point Conservation Area. This whole area is a very well-preserved neighborhood with homes and buildings related to the sea.

The buildings and public spaces in Millers Point date back to the 1830s. This shows how the area changed and developed over the 1800s.

Because of their history and unique style, 18-20a Munn Street was officially added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999. This means they are protected and recognized as important historical sites.
