The 1877 men's tennis season was an exciting time for the new sport of lawn tennis! This was only the second year for these kinds of tournaments. Back then, most tennis events were just for amateur players. This means players didn't get paid to play.

The game of lawn tennis was invented by a British soldier named Major Walter Clopton Wingfield. In 1874, he created a new game with a special hourglass-shaped court. It had a net in the middle, and players used rackets and balls. The game was sold in a box with everything you needed to play. It was based on an older game called "real tennis." A friend, Arthur Balfour, suggested calling it "lawn-tennis." The official birth date of the game was February 23, 1874.

In 1877, all the tournaments were for amateur players. The most important event was the very first 1877 Wimbledon Championship. This famous tournament happened from July 9 to 19. The first-ever winner was Spencer Gore. For many years, Wimbledon was the only major tennis tournament in the world. Later, it became one of the four biggest tennis events, known as the Grand Slams.

Besides Wimbledon, two other tournaments were held in Ireland. One was in Waterford and the other was the University of Dublin Lawn Tennis Championships.
