Atlantic hurricane seasons
1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995

The 1993 Atlantic hurricane season was a period when tropical storms and hurricanes formed in the Atlantic Ocean. It officially started on June 1, 1993, and ended on November 30, 1993. However, storms can sometimes form outside these dates, like Tropical Depression One, which began on May 31. This season had fewer storms than usual, with only 8 named storms. Out of these, four grew strong enough to become hurricanes, and one even became a major hurricane.

Storms of the 1993 Season

This section looks at some of the storms that formed during the 1993 Atlantic hurricane season.

Tropical Depression One

Tropical depression (SSHS)
Duration May 31 – June 2
Intensity 35 mph (55 km/h) (1-min),  999 mbar (hPa)

Tropical Depression One was the first storm of the season. It started on May 31, just before the official start date. A tropical depression is a storm with winds less than 39 miles per hour (63 km/h). This depression moved towards Cuba and made landfall there. It did not get strong enough to become a tropical storm.

After crossing Cuba, Tropical Depression One moved into the Bahamas. It then weakened and disappeared on June 2. Sadly, this storm caused 7 deaths in Cuba.

Tropical Storm Arlene

Tropical storm (SSHS)
Duration June 18 – June 21
Intensity 40 mph (65 km/h) (1-min),  1000 mbar (hPa)

On June 18, a new weather system formed and became Tropical Depression Two. It quickly gained strength and was named Tropical Storm Arlene. A tropical storm has winds between 39 and 73 miles per hour (63-118 km/h).

Arlene moved towards the United States and made landfall in Texas the very next day. The storm did not travel far inland before it weakened and disappeared on June 29. Tropical Storm Arlene caused 6 deaths and about $55 million in damage.

Tropical Storm Bret

Tropical storm (SSHS)
Duration August 4 – August 11
Intensity 60 mph (95 km/h) (1-min),  1002 mbar (hPa)

Tropical Storm Bret began on August 4 as Tropical Depression Three. It moved west across the Atlantic Ocean. Soon after forming, it became a tropical storm. Bret lasted until August 11.

Other Notable Storms

The 1993 Atlantic hurricane season also included several other storms:

  • Tropical Storm Cindy
  • Tropical Storm Dennis
  • Hurricane Emily (the strongest storm of the season)
  • Hurricane Floyd
  • Hurricane Gert
  • Hurricane Harvey
  • Tropical Depression Ten

Storm Names and Retirement

After a hurricane season, the names of very damaging or deadly storms are sometimes "retired." This means they are not used again to name future storms. This helps avoid confusion and shows respect for the people affected.

For the 1993 season, no storm names were retired in the spring of 1994. This meant that all the names used in 1993 could be used again. They were reused during the 1999 hurricane season.
