The 1999 Izmit earthquake was a very strong earthquake. It hit northwestern Turkey on August 17, 1999. The earthquake happened around 3:02 AM local time. It lasted for 37 seconds.
This powerful quake caused a lot of damage. Sadly, it killed many people. It also left about half a million people without homes. The earthquake even caused damage in the big city of Istanbul.
After the earthquake, many countries sent help. Former United States President Bill Clinton visited the affected areas. He met with people in Adapazarı who were impacted by the quake.
