Building History
The construction of 1 Manhattan West progressed quickly. In July 2018, a large loan of $530 million helped with the building work. Just a month later, in August 2018, the building reached its full height, which is called "topping out." It officially opened its doors on October 30, 2019, ready for businesses to move in.
Design and Structure
This skyscraper is 67 stories tall and has a huge area of 2.1 million square feet. It was designed to be very eco-friendly and is expected to receive LEED Gold certification. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and it means the building meets high standards for being good for the environment.
The building's strong structure uses a central core made of reinforced concrete. This core is like the building's spine. Around it, there is a steel frame that helps the building stand strong.
Building Over Train Tracks
A special challenge for this building was that part of it sits over active train tracks that lead into Penn Station. To avoid building directly on top of these tracks, some of the outer columns of the building do not go all the way down to the ground. Instead, they are supported by the central core above the building's main lobby. This clever design allowed the building to be built without stopping the trains below.
Main Businesses Inside
Many different companies have their offices in 1 Manhattan West. As of September 2019, most of the building's space was rented out. Here are some of the businesses that have offices there:
