2007 French presidential election facts for kids
The 2007 French presidential election was a big event in France. It was a time when people voted to choose their new president. This election happened in two parts: the first vote was on April 21–22, 2007, and the second vote was on May 5–6, 2007.
The president at the time, Jacques Chirac, decided not to run for president again. This meant a new leader would be chosen. Many people wanted to become president.
The main candidates were:
- Arlette Laguiller from a workers' party called Lutte Ouvrière.
- Nicolas Sarkozy from the Union for a Popular Movement, a major political party.
- Ségolène Royal from the Socialist Party, another big political party.
- François Bayrou from the Union for French Democracy.
- Jean-Marie Le Pen from the National Front.
- Olivier Besancenot from the Revolutionary Communist League.
- Philippe de Villiers from the Movement for France.
- Marie-George Buffet from the French Communist Party.
- Dominique Voynet from The Greens.
- José Bové, an activist.
- Frédéric Nihous from Hunting, Fishing, Nature, Tradition.
- Gérard Schivardi from the Workers' Party.
After the first vote on April 22, 2007, Nicolas Sarkozy received the most votes, with 31.2%. Ségolène Royal came in second, with 25.9% of the votes. Because no candidate won more than half of the votes in the first round, Sarkozy and Royal went on to a second vote.
In the second vote, Nicolas Sarkozy won the election. He received 53.1% of all the votes. This made him the new President of France.
