2018 Malaysian general election facts for kids
The 2018 Malaysian general election was a very important event in Malaysia. It happened on 9 May 2018. During this election, people voted for new members of the Dewan Rakyat. This is like their main parliament. They also voted for a new Prime Minister of Malaysia. All 222 seats in the Dewan Rakyat were up for election. Also, 505 seats in 12 of Malaysia's 13 state parliaments were part of this election.

What Were the Election Results?
The main opposition group, Pakatan Harapan (PH), won the election. This group was led by Mahathir Mohamad. Along with the Sabah Heritage Party, they won 121 seats in the Dewan Rakyat. This was enough for them to form a majority government.
Because his group won, Mahathir Mohamad became the new Prime Minister of Malaysia. He was sworn into office on May 10, just one day after the election.
The group that used to be in power, Barisan Nasional (BN), lost the election. This group was led by the former Prime Minister, Najib Razak. They won 79 seats. After being the main ruling party for 61 years, Barisan Nasional became the opposition.
