What are Elections?
Elections are how people choose their leaders. In a country like Kyrgyzstan, people vote for individuals or political parties. These chosen people then represent them in the government. The goal is to make decisions for the whole country.
The 2020 Election in Kyrgyzstan
The 2020 election was held to pick 120 members for the Supreme Council. This is the main law-making body in Kyrgyzstan. For a party to have a majority, they needed to win at least 61 seats.
How Voting Worked
People in Kyrgyzstan voted for different political parties. Each party had a list of candidates. The more votes a party received, the more seats they would get in the Supreme Council.
Who Participated?
Many political parties took part in the election. Some of the main parties included Unity, My Homeland Kyrgyzstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Each party had a leader who represented them.
The Election Results
After the votes were counted, two parties, Unity and My Homeland Kyrgyzstan, won the most seats. Together, they had enough seats to form a strong majority. This meant they could easily pass new laws.
Why the Election was Cancelled
Even though the results were announced, many people were unhappy. They felt the election was not fair. Large protests started across the country. Because of these protests, the Central Election Commission decided to cancel the election results. This meant the election was no longer valid.
What Happened Next?
After the election was cancelled, the country faced a period of change. A new acting prime minister, Sadyr Zhaparov, was appointed. This showed that the protests had a big impact on the country's leadership.
