Voters chose Maia Sandu, who used to be the Prime Minister of Moldova, as their new president. She won in the second round of voting on 15 November.

What is a Presidential Election?

A presidential election is when people in a country vote to choose their leader, called the president. The president is usually the head of the country and has many important jobs. These jobs include representing the country, making sure laws are followed, and leading the government.

Why Elections Matter

Elections are a way for citizens to have a say in how their country is run. By voting, people can choose who they think will do the best job. This helps make sure that the government listens to what the people want.

The Candidates in 2020

In the 2020 election, there were several people who wanted to become president. The two main candidates who made it to the second round were Maia Sandu and Igor Dodon.

Maia Sandu's Campaign

Maia Sandu was a strong candidate. She had been the Prime Minister of Moldova before. Her campaign focused on making Moldova a better place for everyone. She wanted to fight against corruption and improve the economy.

How the Election Worked

The election happened in two parts, called rounds.

First Round of Voting

The first round of voting took place on 1 November 2020. In this round, people voted for their favorite candidate. If one candidate got more than half of all the votes (over 50%), they would win right away. However, in this election, no one won more than 50% in the first round.

Second Round: The Run-off

Because no one won in the first round, the two candidates with the most votes went to a second round. This is also called a run-off election. The second round happened on 15 November 2020. In this round, voters chose between Maia Sandu and Igor Dodon.

The Election Results

After the second round of voting, the votes were counted. Maia Sandu received more votes than Igor Dodon.

Maia Sandu Becomes President

Maia Sandu won the election with 943,006 votes, which was about 57.72% of all the votes. This meant she became the new President of Moldova. She was the first woman to be elected president of the country.
