The 2023 Berlin Marathon was the 49th time this famous running race took place in Berlin, Germany. It happened on Sunday, September 24, 2023. This marathon is one of the six biggest running events in the world, called the World Marathon Majors. Nearly 48,000 runners from 156 different countries joined the race.
An amazing new record was set by Ethiopian runner Tigist Assefa. She won the women's race with a time of 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 53 seconds. This was a new world record for women in the marathon! She beat the old record by more than two minutes.
In the men's race, Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge made history. He won the Berlin Marathon for the fifth time, which is a new record for the event. His winning time was 2 hours, 2 minutes, and 42 seconds.
Swiss wheelchair athletes also showed incredible speed. Marcel Hug won the men's wheelchair race in 1 hour, 23 minutes, and 7 seconds. Catherine Debrunner won the women's wheelchair race in 1 hour, 34 minutes, and 16 seconds.

Eliud Kipchoge: A Marathon Legend
Eliud Kipchoge from Kenya is known as one of the greatest marathon runners ever. He holds the world record for the marathon, which he set at the same race the year before. His goal was to win the Berlin Marathon for a record fifth time, and he did it!
Kipchoge also shared that he wants to win three Olympic gold medals in a row. He felt that running in Berlin was the best way to get ready for this big goal.
Tigist Assefa: Breaking Records
Tigist Assefa from Ethiopia was another star of the race. She had also won the Berlin Marathon the year before, in 2022. That win was special because it was only her second marathon ever, and she broke the course record then too!
In 2023, she pushed even harder and set a new world record for women in the marathon. This made her one of the most talked-about athletes after the race.
