2023 Booker Prize facts for kids
The Booker Prize is a super important award for the best English novel written each year. It's like a big trophy for writers! In 2023, the winner was announced on November 26th in London. Before that, a longer list of books was shared on August 1st, and then a shorter list of six books was announced on September 21st. These six books were by writers from different places: one from Britain, one from Canada, two from Ireland, and two from the USA. The writer who wins gets £50,000! The 2023 prize was won by Paul Lynch for his book Prophet Song.
Judging the Books
A group of experts, called a judging panel, chooses the winning book. They read all the books and decide which one is the best. For the 2023 prize, the judges were:
- Esi Edugyan (who led the group)
- Adjoa Andoh
- Robert Webb
- James Shapiro
- Mary Jean Chan
The Nominated Books
Each year, many books are suggested for the Booker Prize. From these, the judges pick a "longlist" of about 12-13 books. Then, they narrow it down to a "shortlist" of just six books.
