This temple was very important to the Romans. When its gates were open, it meant Rome was at war. When they were closed, it meant Rome was at peace. So, closing the gates showed that for the first time in a long while, the Roman Republic was enjoying a period of peace.

A New King in Sparta

In the famous city of Sparta, there was a big change in leadership. An official called an ephor, named Lysander, claimed he saw a sign from the gods. This sign was supposedly against the Spartan King, Leonidas II.

To avoid facing a public challenge, King Leonidas II left Sparta. While he was away, the people decided to remove him from his position as king. His son-in-law, Cleomenes III, then took his place and became the new King of Sparta. This was a major shift in power for the city.
