About the Station
The 28th Street station is part of the IRT Lexington Avenue Line. This line is one of the busiest subway lines in New York City! The station has two platforms, one for trains going downtown and one for trains going uptown. It's an underground station, meaning it's built beneath the streets of Manhattan.
When Did It Open?
The 28th Street station first opened a very long time ago, on October 27, 1904. That makes it one of the older stations in the New York City subway system! Over the years, it has been updated and improved to keep up with the city's needs. For example, it was closed for a while in 2018 for big reconstruction work and reopened in 2019.
Accessibility
Part of the 28th Street station is accessible for people who use wheelchairs or need elevators. There is an elevator available for trains going downtown (southbound). However, if you need an elevator for trains going uptown (northbound), you would need to go to a different station, like Grand Central–42nd Street.
A Historic Place
Did you know that the 28th Street subway station is considered a historic place? It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 30, 2005. This means it's recognized for its important history and architecture.
