36-38 Argyle Place, Millers Point are a group of old, special houses in Millers Point, a suburb of Sydney, Australia. These houses are called "heritage-listed" because they are important to history. They were added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999, which means they are protected.

History of Argyle Place

Millers Point is one of the oldest areas where European settlers lived in Australia. It was a very busy place for ships and sea activities. Argyle Place was planned by Governor Macquarie to be like a park square in London. It was fully finished around 1865.

Records from 1900 show that a person named James Lawler owned these houses. Later, in 1982, the NSW Department of Housing started renting them out.

What Do These Houses Look Like?

These houses are built in a style called Victorian Italianate. They are two stories tall and have three separate homes inside. Two of the homes have one bedroom, and one is a "double bedsit," which is like a studio apartment.

The roof is made of corrugated iron. There's a veranda on the first floor. The front of the building is not perfectly even. It has three arched windows on the ground floor with fancy decorations around them. There are also pretty cast iron railings and gates on the verandas.

On the first floor, there are French doors that open onto the veranda. These doors have small windows on the sides and above them. There's also a narrow staircase from the front veranda that leads down to the basement.

The houses are built with painted stucco (a type of plaster) over brick walls. They have decorative cast iron details and painted wooden parts. The houses face Argyle Place. They are in good condition.

Changes Over Time

Around 1910, some changes were made to the front of the houses. Dormer windows, which are windows that stick out from the roof, were added. The houses were last checked on February 19, 1995.

Why Are These Houses Important?

These houses, built around 1890, are a key part of the street view in Argyle Place. They help make the area look special and historical.

They are also part of the Millers Point Conservation Area. This whole area is like a time capsule, showing how people lived and worked near the sea in the 1800s. It has homes and public spaces that date back to the 1830s. It's a great example of how people changed the landscape in the 19th century.

Because they are so important, 36-38 Argyle Place, Millers Point, were officially listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999.
