Building History
How It Was Built
The 456 Montgomery Plaza was built in the mid-1980s. It opened in August 1985. Before this building, two older banks stood on the same spot. These were the Italian American Bank and A. Borel and Company.
Keeping Old Designs
When the new tower was built, its designers kept parts of the old buildings. They saved the beautiful, classic front walls of the banks. These old walls look like temples. They now form the base of the modern skyscraper.
The Old Bank Facades
The main entrance to 456 Montgomery Plaza uses the old front of the Borel Bank. This part was once at 440 Montgomery Street. The original Italian American Bank headquarters is at the corner of Montgomery and Sacramento Streets. This old front now leads to a rented business space.
A Special Design Idea
Saving these old building fronts was a new idea in city design. It helped solve disagreements between people who wanted to save old buildings and those who wanted to build new ones. This way, new towers could be built while still honoring the city's history.
