The 48th Police Precinct Station is an old and important building located at 1925 Bathgate Avenue in the Tremont neighborhood of the Bronx, New York City. It was finished in 1901. This building is a tall, rectangular structure with three floors and many windows. Its outside walls are made of yellow bricks with stone decorations, built in a style called Italian Renaissance Revival.

This building was once used by the New York City Police Department. However, it stopped being a police station in the 1970s. As of June 2010, a program for young children called Sharon Baptist Headstart was using the building. In 1983, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, which is a special list of important historical places in the United States.

What is the 48th Police Precinct Station?

The 48th Police Precinct Station is a significant building in the Bronx. It stands freely, meaning it's not attached to other buildings. The building has three stories and is seven window sections wide. This design makes it look grand and strong.

Building Style and Design

The outside of the building is made of yellow bricks. It also has stone decorations. The style is called Italian Renaissance Revival. This means its design was inspired by the beautiful buildings of the Italian Renaissance period, which was a time of great art and architecture in Italy hundreds of years ago. Architects Arthur J. Horgan and Vinc J. Slattery designed the building.

From Police Station to Community Hub

For many years, this building served as a police station for the New York City Police Department. Police officers worked there to help keep the community safe. In the 1970s, the building was no longer used as a police station. Later, it found a new purpose. By 2010, it became home to Sharon Baptist Headstart, a program that helps young children get ready for school. This shows how old buildings can be given new life and continue to serve the community in different ways.

Why is it a Historic Place?

The 48th Police Precinct Station is considered important because of its history and its unique architecture. It represents a part of New York City's past and how its neighborhoods developed.

The National Register of Historic Places

In 1983, the 48th Police Precinct Station was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list kept by the United States government. Buildings and places on this list are recognized for their historical, architectural, or archaeological importance. Being on this list helps protect the building and makes sure its history is remembered for future generations.
