67 Harrington Street, The Rocks is a special building in The Rocks, Sydney. It used to be a home, but now it's a place with serviced apartments called the Stafford Apartments. It's located in a historic area of Sydney, Australia.

This building is listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register. This means it's an important part of history and needs to be protected. It was added to this list on May 10, 2002.

The History of 67 Harrington Street

This area has a very old history. From 1788 to 1816, the land where 67 Harrington Street now stands was part of the Colony's Hospital garden.

When the hospital moved in 1815, other buildings started to appear. But this specific spot stayed empty for a long time. It only had a stable and other small buildings.

Early Owners and Changes

The land was first owned by Thomas Weedon. He rented it out until sometime between 1867 and 1871. Then, Fredrick Oatley bought the land.

Around 1885, a two-story brick house was built here. It was connected to other houses nearby. At first, this house was known as 17 Harrington Street.

In 1889, its number changed to 29 Harrington Street. By 1891, Oatley still owned it, and records show it had six rooms and a slate roof. Around 1895, E. B. McKenny became the new owner.

Government Ownership and Modern Use

In December 1900, the NSW Government took over Harrington Street. This was part of a bigger plan for the Observatory Hill area.

In 1924, the house number changed again to 67 Harrington Street. It remained a home until 1978.

Today, the building is part of a bigger project called the Clocktower Development. This project was finished between 1986 and 1989. It includes 55 serviced apartments, 35 shops, offices, and a car park. The apartments are known as the Stafford Apartments.

What 67 Harrington Street Looks Like

No. 67 Harrington Street is a two-story house built in the Victorian style. It's covered in plaster and painted. The house sits high up on a rock base, looking over the street. It connects to the houses next door at 61-65 Harrington Street.

The building has simple decorations. The windows and doors have curved tops with special details. The windows on the second floor sit on small stone supports called corbels. The roof is very steep and covered with corrugated iron.

Updates and What's Hidden Below

In 1986 and 1987, the outside of the building was repaired. This was part of the Clocktower development. The iron roof was replaced with slate, which people believe was the original roof material.

There might be old things hidden under the building. This area was part of the Colony's hospital garden a long time ago. So, there could be interesting historical items buried there. These items could help us learn more about the early days of Sydney.

Why 67 Harrington Street is Important

This building and its land are very important for the history and science of New South Wales. The whole area of The Rocks is also very important on its own.

Historical Importance

The land has historical value because it was part of the Colony's hospital site in 1807. The building itself is important because it's an example of the houses built in The Rocks in the 1800s.

Visual Importance

The building also looks great and fits in well with other historic buildings nearby. It's part of a strong group of buildings on Harrington Street and also connects visually to buildings on Argyle Street.

Hidden Discoveries

There's a chance to find old things under the building. This could include items from the hospital garden or later developments. These discoveries could teach us a lot about the first European settlement in Australia. The Rocks is known for its archaeological sites, and finding things here would be very significant.
