777 Main Street is a tall building in Downtown Hartford, Connecticut. It used to be called the Hartford National Bank and Trust Building. This building was finished in 1967. It is a great example of Mid-Century Modern style, designed by Welton Becket.
In 2014, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Later, it was changed into homes by Becker + Becker. The building is very eco-friendly, earning a special LEED Platinum® award. It is also Connecticut's first "microgrid." This means it makes its own clean energy. Solar panels on the roof and a special fuel cell create power and heat for the building. This clean energy also charges 31 electric cars in the garage. This helps people travel in a cleaner way.
What Does 777 Main Street Look Like?
777 Main Street stands out in the middle of downtown Hartford. It faces the historic Old State House. The building takes up most of a city block. It is about 354 feet (108 meters) tall and has 26 floors.
It is made from strong concrete and steel. Its outside walls have about 2000 special window sections. The walls are held up by L-shaped steel beams at the corners. Big steel beams above the second floor support the upper walls. The main entrance is set back under these beams. It has glass walls with bronze-colored steel frames.
A Brief History of 777 Main Street
The Hartford National Bank and Trust Company was a very big bank in Connecticut. In the 1960s, city planners asked the bank to join a big city improvement project. This project was around Hartford's Constitution Square, where the Old State House is.
The bank invested $14 million in this project. They decided to build this tall tower. The building was designed by Welton Becket, an architect from Los Angeles. Becket was also involved in the city's planning. The builder, George Fuller, also built the nearby Phoenix Life Insurance Company Building. That building is another famous modern building in the area.
Bank of America was the last company to use the building. They moved out in 2012, and the building became empty. In 2014, the building was changed into fancy apartments. This project cost $85 million. It now has 285 apartments, including studios and one or two-bedroom homes. Twenty percent of these homes are for families with lower or medium incomes. The building also has more shops at street level.
