Building History
Why Was the Building Built?
The Beacon on Chestnut was originally built to be the main office for a company called Southwestern Bell. It was meant to replace their older headquarters, the Southwestern Bell Building. This new building was a big step for the company.
Changes Over Time
After the building was finished, Southwestern Bell went through many changes. The company merged with others several times. Because of these mergers, the main office moved to San Antonio, Texas. The company eventually became known as AT&T.
Who Owned the Building?
In 2006, a company called Inland American Real Estate Trust bought the building. They paid $205 million for it. After buying it, they leased the entire building to AT&T. This meant AT&T was the only company using the building for the next ten years.
AT&T Leaves the Building
In 2013, AT&T announced that they would be leaving the building. They said they would not renew their lease when it ended in 2017. Over the years, the number of AT&T employees working in the building had dropped a lot. It went from 4,800 people to only 2,000. This happened because of layoffs, sending work to other companies (called outsourcing), and more people working from home (called remote work).
New Owners and Future Plans
After AT&T left, the building faced financial difficulties and was taken over by US Bank. On April 25, 2022, the building was sold to a company called SomeraRoad for $4.05 million. SomeraRoad is a developer from New York. They are the ones who plan to change the building into apartments or homes.
