He is best known for his two adventure stories, Tommy Storm and its follow-up, Tommy Storm and the Galactic Knights. A. J. Healy had an interesting childhood and worked many different jobs around the world. Eventually, he returned to Dublin, Ireland, where he was born, to begin his writing career.

In 2002, he finished his first book, Tommy Storm. However, it was hard for him to find a publisher because he was a new author. After four years, he decided to publish the book himself. He printed 5,000 copies. A few months later, about 4,000 of those books had sold. That's when a publishing company called Quercus bought the rights to publish his book. This meant they would print and sell Tommy Storm to a wider audience.
