Sir Arcot Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar (born October 14, 1887 – died April 15, 1974) was a very important Indian doctor and educator. He helped shape education and health in India for many years. He was the younger twin brother of Sir Arcot Ramasamy Mudaliar.

Early Life and Education

Sir A. L. Mudaliar was born in 1887. He first studied in a place called Kurnool. In 1903, he moved to Chennai. He then went to Madras Christian College for his higher studies.

A Leader in Education

Sir A. L. Mudaliar became the Vice-Chancellor of Madras University. This is like being the main leader of a big university. He held this important job for 27 years! He was also the principal of Madras Medical College, a famous medical school.

Helping Global Health

He played a big role in the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO is a special group that works to make people healthier all over the world. In 1948, he was part of India's team at the first WHO meeting in Geneva. He even became the chairman of the WHO's main board in 1949 and 1950. He also served as Vice-President and President at different WHO meetings.

Awards and Honors

Sir A. L. Mudaliar received many important awards for his work.

  • He was made a Knight in 1945. This means he was given the title "Sir."
  • He received the Padma Bhushan award in 1954.
  • He received the Padma Vibhushan award in 1963. These are two of India's highest civilian awards.
  • He was also the president of the 46th Indian Science Congress in 1959.

His Book

He wrote an important medical textbook called Clinical Obstetrics. The first version came out in 1938. It was later updated and is still used by medical students.
