Aiyathurai Varnakulasingham Kulasingham (born October 11, 1890 – died January 16, 1978) was an important person from Sri Lanka. He was a lawyer, a politician, and a journalist. He also worked as an editor for big newspapers like the Ceylon Daily News.
Early Life and Family
A. V. Kulasingham was born on October 11, 1890. He went to school at Jaffna College.
In 1910, Kulasingham married Rasammah. They had three sons and five daughters together.
His Career and Work
Kulasingham started writing for newspapers when he was still a student. He wrote articles for the Morning Star and The Times of Ceylon.
Later, he became an editor for the Ceylon Daily News in 1925. He also edited another newspaper called Hindu Organ. He even worked as a special reporter for a famous newspaper in England, the Manchester Guardian.
Besides journalism, Kulasingham was also a lawyer. He worked in law for over 50 years. He was even a "crown advocate," which meant he represented the government in legal cases.
Kulasingham was also interested in politics. He helped start a political group called the All Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC) in 1944. He was one of its main leaders.
In 1947, he ran for election to become a member of parliament. He wanted to represent the Kayts Electoral District. However, he lost the election by a small number of votes.
His Later Years
A. V. Kulasingham passed away on January 16, 1978.
