The Story of AAA NCNU

Early Days and Good Roads

The story of AAA NCNU began in 1900. A group of car fans met in San Francisco because they saw a big problem. Back then, there were not many good roads. Also, there were many different rules for cars in different towns. This made it hard for people to drive.

So, these car owners started the Automobile Club of California (ACC). They wanted better roads and simpler laws for cars. Their hard work paid off in 1905. The state of California made new rules that were the same everywhere. This helped drivers a lot.

Becoming Official and Helping Drivers

In 1907, the club officially became the California State Automobile Association. It joined the American Automobile Association (AAA) in 1910. The club's main goals were "Good Roads and Just Legislation." This meant they wanted to improve roads and make fair laws for drivers.

The CSAA helped drivers in many ways. They sent people to map out roads in California. Their first maps came out in 1909. They also put up thousands of road signs across the state. This made it much easier for people to find their way. The state of California took over putting up signs in 1947.

Growing and Changing

The club started offering car insurance in 1913. Later, in 1974, they also began to offer home insurance.

CSAA grew bigger over the years. In 1933, they opened an office in Nevada. This made them the official AAA club there. Then, in 1994, they also took over the Automobile Club of Utah.

In 2007, CSAA announced it would move its main office to Walnut Creek, California. The new building was ready in 2009.

In February 2011, the club changed its name. It became AAA Northern California, Nevada & Utah, or AAA NCNU. This new name showed all the areas the club served.

Around 2010, the club separated its insurance business from its car club services. The car club stayed a non-profit group. The insurance part became a separate company. In 2013, the insurance company changed its name to CSAA Insurance Group.

In April 2017, the car club moved its main office again. It moved back to Walnut Creek, close to the insurance group's office.
