The Story of AC Mogadiscio
The AC Mogadiscio was an important football team in Mogadishu. It was mainly for the Italian people living there. In 1933, the first amateur football championship in Mogadishu under Italian rule began. It was called "Coppa Federazione Sportiva." Three teams played: "AC Mogadiscio," "Marina," and "Milizia." AC Mogadiscio finished in second place.
Winning the Championship
In 1947, the AC Mogadiscio team won the amateur Somalia Championship. This was a big achievement for them!
A New Name: AS Mogadiscio
In 1952, the team's name changed to AS Mogadiscio. This stood for "Associazione Sport Mogadiscio." They finished third in the championship that year. The team changed its name because it wanted to get more Somali fans. The old name used the Italian word "calcio," which means 'football.' By removing it, they hoped to seem less Italian and more welcoming to everyone.
Rival Teams
During the 1950s, the main rival of AS Mogadiscio was the Lavori Publici FC. This team was also known as "Genio Oficina." Lavori Publici FC was another team with Italian connections, but it had many native Somali fans.
Becoming Champions of Somalia
In the 1957-58 Championship, AS Mogadiscio was named the "Champion of Somalia." Here are their results from that season:
- 1. AS Mogadishu: 10 matches played, 9 victories, 0 ties, 1 defeat, 43 goals scored, 10 goals received, 18 points. They were the "Champion."
- 2. AS Corpo Polizia: 10 matches played, 6 victories, 2 ties, 2 defeats, 21 goals scored, 11 goals received, 14 points.
- 3. Autoparco: 10 matches played, 6 victories, 0 ties, 4 defeats, 25 goals scored, 18 goals received, 12 points.
- 4. LLPP: 10 matches played, 4 victories, 3 ties, 3 defeats, 20 goals scored, 17 goals received, 11 points (this is Lavori Publici FC).
- 5. AS The Gab: 10 matches played, 2 victories, 0 ties, 8 defeats, 10 goals scored, 34 goals received, 4 points.
- 6. AC Scuraran: 10 matches played, 0 victories, 1 tie, 9 defeats, 10 goals scored, 39 goals received, 1 point.
In the 1959-1960 Championship, AS Mogadiscio played its last season. They finished in third place.
The End of the Team
In 1961, the team was officially closed down. This happened mainly because of money problems. There were very few fans left because most of the Italians in Mogadishu and Somalia had moved away, many of them back to Italy.
