The Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited, usually called ANZ, is a very big bank. It's the third largest bank in Australia. This is measured by its "market capitalisation," which is the total value of all its shares. Only the Commonwealth Bank and Westpac Banking Corporation are bigger in Australia.
Most of ANZ's business is in Australia. They focus on helping everyday people and businesses with their money. ANZ is also the biggest bank in New Zealand. In New Zealand, it was known as ANZ National Bank Limited for a while. Then, in 2012, its name changed to ANZ Bank New Zealand Limited. Between 2003 and 2012, ANZ used two different names in New Zealand: ANZ and the National Bank of New Zealand. The National Bank name was stopped in 2012. Some of its branches closed, and others became ANZ branches.
ANZ doesn't just operate in Australia and New Zealand. It also has offices and services in 34 other countries around the world.
What is ANZ?
ANZ is a major financial company. It helps people and businesses with many money-related things. This includes things like savings accounts, loans, and credit cards. They also help bigger companies with their finances.
How ANZ Started
ANZ was officially created on 1 October 1951. This happened when two older banks joined together. These banks were the Bank of Australia and the Union Bank of Australia Limited. Both of these banks had been around for a long time before they merged.
ANZ and Being Sustainable
ANZ has been recognized for being a "sustainable" bank. This means they try to operate in a way that is good for the environment and society. In 2008, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index named ANZ the most sustainable bank in the world. This was the second year in a row they received this award. In 2007, they shared the title with another Australian bank, Westpac.
