"A Financial Fable" is a classic Donald Duck comic book story. It was written and drawn by Carl Barks in September 1950. This story explores an interesting idea: what would happen if everyone in a town suddenly became a millionaire? It shows how money works and why hard work is important.

The Story of "A Financial Fable"

This comic teaches us about economics in a fun way. It shows what happens when people stop working.

Life on Scrooge's Farm

The story begins on Scrooge McDuck's farm. Scrooge is a very rich duck, but he also works hard. His nephews, Huey, Dewey and Louie, help him. They enjoy their farm work.

However, Donald Duck does not like working on the farm. He gets tired of it and decides to quit. Donald then joins his cousin, Gladstone Gander. Gladstone is known for his incredible luck. They both want to find easy money.

The Money Storm

Scrooge keeps all his money in a corn crib on the farm. One day, a strong cyclone hits the farm. A cyclone is a powerful storm with strong winds. The wind blows Scrooge's money everywhere! Cash flies all over the area.

Scrooge is not worried, though. He knows that he and his nephews can earn the money back. They will do this by continuing to work hard.

Everyone Becomes a Millionaire!

Meanwhile, Gladstone Gander shows off his amazing luck. He holds out his hat and asks for money to fall into it. Suddenly, two million of Scrooge's dollars fall from the sky! They land right in Gladstone's hat.

The wind also carries money to other farms. Many farmhands find money and get excited. They all exclaim, "Forget work! I am going to see the world!" Everyone decides to stop working. They want to travel and spend their new riches.

Donald and Gladstone also plan to travel. They drive to the nearby village to buy gas. Huey, Dewey, and Louie choose to stay on the farm. They feel it is their duty to care for the animals and crops.

A Village Without Workers

When Donald and Gladstone arrive at the village, they find it empty. The village has become a ghost town. A ghost town is a place where everyone has left. They cannot buy gas, a soda, or a bus ticket.

The gas station, drugstore, and bus depot all have signs. These signs say things like "Closed; Owner Gone to See the World." No one is left to work.

Gladstone does not know what to do. Donald suggests they walk to another town. This town was not hit by the money cyclone. But Donald cannot even buy new shoes. The shoe store is also empty.

Donald gives up. He realizes that money is not useful if no one is working. He returns to his uncle Scrooge's farm. Donald gets his job back. Gladstone gives Donald his million dollars and goes fishing. Scrooge tells Donald that an egg for breakfast now costs one million dollars. This shows that things are very expensive when no one produces them.

Back to Normal

Eventually, all the new millionaires run out of food. They go to Scrooge's farm to buy food. Some even want to get a job. Scrooge and his nephews are the only ones producing food. This means they can charge very high prices.

An egg now costs one million dollars. A ham also costs one million. A cabbage costs two million, and a peck of corn costs four million. A peck is an old unit of measurement for dry goods.

Because of these high prices, Scrooge soon gets all his money back. Everything goes back to normal. The story teaches that money only has value when people work to produce goods and services.
