What the Story is About
After the sad events in the previous book, The Wizard's Dilemma, Nita feels very down. She also starts having strange dreams. In these dreams, she sees a lonely person who won't accept any help. Nita finds it hard to understand what this person is trying to say.
Meanwhile, Kit gets a special mission. His friends Tom and Carl ask him to find Darryl McAllister. Darryl is a boy with autism. He is also on his 'Ordeal', which is a tough wizard test. Darryl has been stuck in this test for three months. But Darryl is not just any boy. He is an 'Abdal'. This means he has amazing power. He helps bring good energy from 'The One'. This good energy helps to control 'The Lone One', who is a powerful force of evil in the universe. An Abdal can even be in more than one place at the same time!
Kit uses his friend Ponch's special ability. Ponch can "walk" through different universes. This allows Kit to enter Darryl's mind. Kit wants to help Darryl with his Ordeal. Inside Darryl's mind, Kit sees Darryl going through a very hard time. Because Kit stays there too long, he starts to change. He begins to act like Darryl. Kit becomes quiet and has sudden mood changes. He gets stuck inside Darryl's mind.
As Nita keeps thinking about her strange dreams, she starts to understand the lonely person. She realizes it's Darryl, the boy Kit is trying to find. Nita then learns that Darryl is an Abdal. She also figures out that Darryl is cleverly tricking 'The Lone One'. Nita decides to enter Darryl's mind too. She hopes to save both Kit and Darryl.
Darryl has created a clever trap inside his own mind. He traps 'The Lone One' there. He makes 'The Lone One' experience what it's like to have autism every day. This is the same trap that Kit got stuck in. Nita has to enter this difficult trap to help them.
In the end, Nita manages to break the trap. She frees Darryl, Kit, and even 'The Lone One'. Darryl then makes a deal with 'The Lone One'. Darryl agrees to stay in his own universe if 'The Lone One' promises to return there someday. However, Darryl is very smart. He uses his ability to be in more than one place. He leaves his autistic self behind in that universe. Darryl then returns to his own body, free from autism.
