The Aaron Jr. and Susan Parker Farm is a really old and important farm in Cavendish, Vermont. It's located at 1715 Brook Road. This historic place is about 16 acres (6.5 ha) big.

The farm has a beautiful farmhouse built around 1815. It's designed in the Federal style. There's also a very old and well-kept English barn from the early 1800s. Because of its history and how well it's been preserved, the farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. This means it's officially recognized as a special place in American history.

Exploring the Parker Farm Property

The Parker Farm is in a quiet, country part of northern Cavendish. It sits on the west side of Brook Road. The farm's 16 acres (6.5 ha) are split by the road. There's a wooded area on the east side. On the west side, you'll find a grassy field and the farm buildings.

The Historic Farmhouse

The main house is a two-and-a-half-story building made of brick. It's close to the road. The roof slopes down on the sides, and there are chimneys at each end. The front of the house is very balanced and has five sections. The main door is in the middle with a window above it.

The windows on the first floor of the front side have a special design. They have "blind arches" above them. These are arch shapes made of brick that look like they could be windows, but they're solid. A newer garage is attached to the right side of the house. An older wooden part extends from the back.

The Old English Barn

Just northwest of the house, you'll find the barn. It's set a bit further back from the road. This barn is an example of an English barn. This style was common in the early 1800s. It's a simple, rectangular building that was used for storing crops and housing animals.

A Glimpse into the Farm's Past

The very oldest part of the house is the back section. It was built around 1795 by Aaron Parker Jr. He was the son of one of the first people to settle in Cavendish.

When Was the Main House Built?

Sometime in the 1810s, Aaron Parker Jr. added the main brick part of the house. We know this because of its style. Those "blind arches" on the front were popular in Vermont houses during that time.

Architectural Inspiration

The design of the house also shows ideas from Asher Benjamin. He was a famous architect who lived nearby in Windsor, Vermont. In 1797, he published a book called Country Builder's Assistant. This was the first book in America that showed people how to design buildings. The Parker Farmhouse clearly used some of his ideas.

The Parker family owned this farm for a very long time. It stayed in the hands of Aaron Parker Jr.'s family until 1933.
