Abarr, Colorado facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Abarr is a small, undeveloped place in Yuma County, Colorado, in the United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

Abarr's History

Abarr has an interesting past, even though it's a small place.

How Abarr Got Its Name

Abarr wasn't always called Abarr! When it was first planned out in 1922, its name was "Brownsville." But just one year later, in 1923, the name was changed to Abarr.

The name "Abarr" comes from the maiden name of Ethel Hoffman. She was married to Silas Hoffman, and together they ran the local post office. So, the community was named in her honor.

The Post Office Years

The Abarr post office opened its doors in 1923, the same year the community got its new name. It served the people living there for many years, helping them send and receive mail. However, the post office eventually closed down in 1948.
