Abbas III was a young ruler of Iran from 1732 to 1736. He was born in January 1732 and passed away in February 1740. Abbas was the son of Tahmasp II, who was a Shah (king) from the Safavid dynasty. His mother was Shahpari Begum.

Abbas became Shah when he was just a baby. This happened after his father, Tahmasp II, was removed from power by a powerful general named Nader Khan. Nader Khan later became known as Nader Shah.

Even though Abbas was the official ruler, Nader Khan was the one truly in charge. Nader Khan held important positions like deputy of state and viceroy. This meant he made all the real decisions for the country.

Becoming Shah

  • Abbas III was made Shah on 7 September 1732.
  • He was only a few months old at the time.
  • His father, Tahmasp II, had been removed from the throne.
  • Nader Khan was the most powerful person in Iran.
  • Nader Khan decided that Abbas should be the new Shah.
  • But Nader Khan kept all the real power for himself.

The End of His Reign

  • Abbas III was Shah for about four years.
  • In March 1736, Nader Khan decided to become Shah himself.
  • He had himself crowned as Nader Shah.
  • This meant Abbas III was no longer the ruler.
  • This event also marked the official end of the Safavid dynasty.
  • The Safavid family had ruled Iran for a long time.
  • After being removed from power, Abbas was sent to prison.
  • He joined his father, Tahmasp II, in a prison in Sabzevar, a city in Khorasan.

His Final Years

  • In 1738, Nader Shah went on a military trip.
  • He traveled to Afghanistan and India.
  • Nader Shah left his son, Reza Qoli Mirza, in charge of Iran.
  • While Nader Shah was away, rumors spread that he had died.
  • Reza Qoli Mirza started getting ready to become the new Shah.
  • However, a man named Mohammed Hosein Khan Qajar was guarding Abbas and his father in prison.
  • Mohammed Hosein warned Reza Qoli Mirza.
  • He said that if people in Sabzevar heard Nader Shah was dead, they might try to free Tahmasp II.
  • They might put Tahmasp II back on the throne.
  • To stop this from happening, Reza Qoli Mirza gave an order.
  • He told Mohammed Hosein to kill Tahmasp and his sons.
  • So, Mohammed Hosein killed Tahmasp II and the young Abbas.
  • He also killed Abbas's brother, Esmail.
  • Historians believe these events happened around May or June 1739.
  • Other sources suggest it might have been in 1740.
