Abbot of Lindores facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Abbot of Lindores was the main leader of the Tironensian monks at Lindores Abbey in Fife, Scotland. This important position also involved managing the abbey's lands and wealth. The nearby town of Newburgh was actually started by and belonged to the abbey.

The role of Abbot was created when Lindores Abbey was founded. This happened sometime between 1190 and 1191. It was founded by Prince David, who was the brother of King William the Lion. Prince David was also known as the Earl of Huntingdon and Lord of Garioch. The Abbot was like the head teacher or manager of the entire monastery.

Later on, the title changed to Commendator of Lindores. This often happened when the abbey's lands and income were given to someone who wasn't necessarily a monk, but was appointed by the King.

The Abbots of Lindores Abbey

Lindores Abbey was a very important place in Scotland for many centuries. The abbots were in charge of the monks, their spiritual lives, and all the abbey's business. They managed large areas of land and were powerful figures in the region.

The Tironensian monks followed strict rules and focused on prayer, study, and manual labor. The Abbot made sure these rules were followed and that the abbey ran smoothly.
