Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Patrick Leslie, 1st Lord Lindores, was an important Scottish nobleman who lived a long time ago. He was part of the Scottish peerage, which means he belonged to a special group of noble families in Scotland. He was known for his service to King James VI.

Life and Times

Patrick Leslie was the second son of Andrew Leslie, 5th Earl of Rothes. His mother was Grizel Hamilton. For many years, from 1569 to 1600, he was in charge of Lindores Abbey. You can think of him like a manager of the abbey.

In August 1594, Patrick Leslie helped plan the fun events for the baptism of Prince Henry at Stirling Castle. This included a special show called a "masque" and a knightly contest called a "tournament." During the tournament, Lord Lindores even dressed up as Penthesilea, the Queen of the Amazons!

In 1595, Anne of Denmark, who was the Queen, and the Earl of Orkney stayed with him at Lindores Abbey. This shows he was an important person in Scotland.

In September 1598, King James VI came to Abdie to deal with a problem. He was there to arrest John Arnot, who was accused of harming one of Lord Lindores' servants.

In July 1607, Lord Lindores wrote a letter to the Earl of Salisbury. In his letter, he mentioned that he had served King James since 1579. He had spent 14 years working closely with the King in his bedchamber. This letter was sent after he helped his brother-in-law, Sir Robert Stewart, get out of a difficult situation.
