The Story of Abbott's
How It All Began
Abbott's Frozen Custard was started in 1902 by a man named Arthur Abbott. He used to travel with small carnivals, selling his delicious frozen custard. In 1926, Arthur Abbott decided to settle down in Rochester, New York.
He opened his first shop near Ontario Beach Park. This park was a very popular amusement park back then. Many people visited the park, which helped his new shop become very busy.
Growth and New Owners
Arthur Abbott opened more shops, including some at Playland in Rye Beach. He loved horse racing, and the money from his shops helped him follow this passion. In 1952, his horse, Blue Man, even won a big race called the Preakness Stakes!
In 1957, Arthur Abbott was in his 70s. He decided to sell his successful business to Leonard and Thelma Schreiber. They became the new owners of Abbott's Frozen Custard.
Franchising and New Treats
The Schreibers started letting other people open Abbott's shops as franchises. The very first franchise opened in Rochester in 1977. This helped Abbott's grow even more.
In 1981, Thelma Schreiber created a special new dessert called the "Turtle." It was a tasty chocolate-covered frozen custard on a stick. Later, in 1999, Abbott's even opened stores in Japan!
Today, Gail Drew, who is Leonard and Thelma Schreiber's daughter, is the president of the company.
