Abbott's Frozen Custard is a popular company that sells frozen custard. It started in Rochester, New York. You can find their shops all over New York state. They also have stores in other states like Florida, Louisiana, Massachusetts, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
The Story of Abbott's Custard
Abbott's Frozen Custard began a long time ago, in 1902. It was started by a man named Arthur Abbott. He used to travel around with small carnivals, selling his delicious frozen custard.
How It All Started
In 1926, Arthur Abbott decided to settle down in Rochester, New York. He opened his first shop near Ontario Beach Park. This park was a very popular place back then. Many people visited it, which was great for his new business!
Arthur Abbott also opened more shops in Playland at Rye Beach. The money he made from these shops helped him with his hobby: horse racing. In 1952, his horse, named Blue Man, won a big race called the Preakness Stakes. This win earned him a lot of money!
New Owners and New Ideas
In 1957, Arthur Abbott was in his 70s. He decided it was time to sell his business. Leonard and Thelma Schreiber bought Abbott's Frozen Custard. They became the new owners and had a great idea: they started letting other people open Abbott's shops as franchises.
The very first franchise shop opened in 1977 on Ridge Road in Rochester. Many more franchise locations followed after that. The Schreiber family also added new and exciting treats. In 1981, Thelma Schreiber created the "Turtle" dessert. It was a yummy frozen custard treat covered in chocolate, served on a stick.
Abbott's custard even teamed up with other companies. In 2006, some Krispy Kreme doughnut shops in Florida started selling Abbott's custard. People in Japan also got to enjoy Abbott's! A Japanese company opened Abbott's shops there starting in 1999. Today, Gail Drew, who is Leonard and Thelma Schreiber's daughter, is the president of the company.
