History
Abbott got its name from Captain F. M. Abbott. He moved to this area from Pennsylvania after the American Civil War. This war happened in the United States from 1861 to 1865. Captain Abbott built a store in Abbott in 1901.
Early Businesses
Abbott is located near Chuquatonchee Creek. In the past, it was a busy place with several important businesses. There was a grist mill, which ground grain into flour. There was also a cotton gin, a machine that separated cotton fibers from their seeds.
The community also had a saddle shop, where saddles for horses were made and repaired. A blacksmith shop was also present, where metal tools and horse shoes were made. People could also find three general stores in Abbott. These stores sold many different kinds of goods.
Post Office and Notable People
A post office served the community of Abbott for many years. It operated from 1880 until 1941. This allowed people to send and receive mail.
A famous person named Emmett H. Walker, Jr. was born in Abbott. He later became the Chief of the National Guard Bureau. This is a very important role in the United States military. He held this position from 1982 to 1986.
