What Does the Name "Chuquatonchee" Mean?

The name Chuquatonchee Creek comes from the Choctaw language. The Choctaw people are a Native American tribe who have lived in the southeastern United States for a very long time. In their language, "Chuquatonchee" means "hog corn." This name likely refers to a place where hogs (pigs) would go to eat and get fat, perhaps because there was a lot of corn growing there.

In 1966, the United States Board on Geographic Names officially decided that "Chuquatonchee Creek" would be the correct name and spelling for this stream. Before that, the creek was known by many different names. Some of these older names included Chookahtonkchie Creek, Chuckatonchee Creek, and Sakatonchee River.
