A Look Back in Time
In 1913, a book called the McAlpine Gazetteer mentioned Abbott Cove. A gazetteer is like a dictionary of places. It said that Abbott Cove was in the Twillingate District. The closest "post town" was Fortune Harbour. A post town was a place where people could send and receive mail.
What Did Old Maps Say?
An old guide from 1884, called a pilot guide, also talked about Abbot Cove. A pilot guide helps sailors navigate the waters. This guide described the cove in Notre Dame Bay.
It mentioned an "Eastern point," which was the end of a narrow piece of land sticking out into the water. This land rose to a wooded cone, about 390 feet (119 meters) high. The guide warned sailors about "foul ground" and "sunken rocks" in the cove. This meant there were dangers hidden underwater that could damage ships.
It also described a tall hill, about 435 feet (133 meters) high, that dropped straight down to the water. A small village was located at the base of this hill.
