Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan (born August 19, 1908 – died February 18, 2016) was a famous Indian singer. He sang Hindustani music, which is a type of classical music from Northern India.

He was known for singing different styles like khayal, dhrupad, dhamar, and thumri. He was also the oldest person to ever receive a Padma award, which is a very important award in India.

Early Life and Musical Journey

Abdul Rashid Khan was born into a family of musicians. His family's musical roots went back many generations. They followed the traditional Gwalior gharana style of singing.

He learned music from his father, Chhote Yusuf Khan. He also learned from his father's elder brother, Bade Yusuf Khan. Other family elders like Chand Khan and Mahtab Khan also taught him. They helped him learn the Gwalior style of singing. He then made this style his own.

He was also a descendant of Tansen. Tansen was a very famous singer from the 1500s. He was one of the nine special people in the court of Akbar the Great.

His Amazing Career

Abdul Rashid Khan's traditional songs were recorded by the BBC and Iraq Radio. Important groups like the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi and the ITC Sangeet Research Academy also recorded his music. They wanted to keep his songs safe for the future.

For many years, he performed regularly on Akashvani (Indian radio) and Doordarshan Lucknow (Indian TV). He also performed at many music festivals across India. These included the Sadarang Conference and the ITC Sangeet Sammelan.

Many people admired his work. He received awards from groups like the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Academy in 1981. He also got an award from Banaras Hindu University in 1993.

Abdul Rashid Khan wrote over 2,000 songs in his life. He was also a talented writer and poet. He used the pen name "Rasan Piya." Many of the songs he sang were his own creations. He taught many students and became a respected "guru" at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy.

His Later Years

Abdul Rashid Khan passed away on February 18, 2016. He was 107 years old. Besides being a great musician, he was a very religious person. He prayed and read the Quran every morning.
