Biography
Becoming Emir
Abdullah became the Emir of Córdoba after his half-brother, al-Mundhir, passed away. Some people at the time thought Abdullah might have played a part in his brother's death, but this is probably not true. Abdullah wasn't very interested in leading the government. He preferred to spend his time hunting and focusing on his religious beliefs.
Challenges to His Rule
During Abdullah's time as emir, one of his biggest challenges was a powerful leader named Umar Ibn Hafsun. Ibn Hafsun had taken control of several areas, including Bobastro, Granada, and Jaén. He also made alliances with people in other cities like Archidona and Baeza.
In 891, Abdullah's forces fought against Ibn Hafsun near a castle called Polei. Abdullah won this battle, and Ibn Hafsun lost control of some cities. However, Ibn Hafsun was very determined. By the next year, he had already gotten back all the areas he had lost.
End of His Reign
In 911, Abdullah and Ibn Hafsun tried to make peace and signed an agreement. But the fighting started again the very next year. Abdullah was working to improve his position in the war when he died in Córdoba.
Before he died, Abdullah had chosen one of his sons to take over as the next emir. However, this son died before Abdullah. Then, Abdullah's father chose Abd-al-Rahman III, who was Abdullah's grandson, to be the next ruler. Abd al-Rahman III would later become a very famous and powerful ruler.
Family Life
Abdullah was the son of Muhammad I. He was also the younger brother of al-Mundhir, the emir who ruled before him.
Marriage and Children
Around the year 863, Abdullah married a woman named Onneca Fortúnez. She was the daughter of Fortún Garcés, who was the King of Pamplona. Later, before 880, Abdullah and Onneca separated. She went back to Pamplona and married someone else.
Abdullah had several children. One of his sons was named Muhammed ibn Abd Allah. He was born in 864. Muhammed married a woman named Muzna. They had a son named Abd al-Rahman III, who was born just a few weeks after his father, Muhammed, passed away. Abd al-Rahman III later became the next Emir of Córdoba.
Abdullah also had other children, including al-Mutarrif, Aban, and al-Asi.
