Abel Ram (born 1753, died 1830) was an important person in Ireland who owned a lot of land and was also a politician. He was part of a group called the Anglo-Irish, which means his family had English roots but lived in Ireland. His parents were Andrew Ram and Mary Digby.

Abel Ram married Elizabeth Stopford. Her father was Captain Joseph Stopford, and her uncle was James Stopford, 1st Earl of Courtown, who was a very influential person.

Abel Ram's Political Career

Abel Ram was a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is someone who is chosen by people to represent them and make laws in a country's government.

  • He was an MP for a place called Duleek in the Irish Parliament from 1783 to 1790. The Irish Parliament was the main law-making body for Ireland at that time.
  • He also represented County Wexford in the Irish Parliament from 1797 to 1800. His uncle, who was also named Abel Ram, helped him get elected in Duleek.

After the Acts of Union in 1800, Ireland and Great Britain joined together to form the United Kingdom. This meant that Irish MPs would now sit in the United Kingdom Parliament in London.

  • Abel Ram continued to be an MP for County Wexford in the new United Kingdom Parliament. He served from 1801 to 1806 and again from 1807 to 1812. He was supported by his wife's powerful family during his time in Parliament.
