Kids Encyclopedia Facts

James Stopford, 1st Earl of Courtown (born 1700 – died January 12, 1770) was an important Irish politician. He played a key role in the government of his time.

James Stopford was born into a well-known family in County Wexford, Ireland. His father, also named James Stopford, was a politician who represented County Wexford in the Irish House of Commons. This was like the parliament or law-making body for Ireland back then. His mother was Frances (née Jones).

Early Political Career

James Stopford followed in his father's footsteps. In 1721, he became a member of parliament for County Wexford. He held this position, or "seat," until 1727. After that, he represented another area called Fethard (County Wexford) from 1727 to 1758.

In 1756, he was given an important job called High Sheriff of Wexford. A High Sheriff was a top official in a county. They were responsible for keeping law and order.

Becoming an Earl

James Stopford's hard work and importance were recognized. In 1758, he was given a special title in the Peerage of Ireland. This meant he became a Baron Courtown. A Baron is a noble rank, one of the lowest in the peerage system.

Just four years later, he received even higher honors. In 1762, he was made a Viscount Stopford and then an Earl of Courtown. An Earl is a very high noble rank, just below a Marquess. These titles showed his significant influence and status in Irish society.

Family Life

Lord Courtown married Elizabeth Smyth in 1727. Elizabeth was the daughter of Edward Smyth, who was a Bishop of Down and Connor.

James Stopford, the 1st Earl of Courtown, passed away in January 1770. His eldest son, James, inherited his title and became the 2nd Earl of Courtown. This son also became a well-known politician.

Lord Courtown had other notable children. His second son, Edward Stopford, became a Lieutenant-General in the Army. Another son, Thomas Stopford, became a Bishop of Cork and Ross. Lady Courtown lived for 18 years after her husband, passing away in September 1788.
