Abibatu Mogaji was a very important Nigerian businesswoman. She was known as the Ìyál'ọ́jà of Lagos, which means "Mother of the Market" or "Leader of the Market Women." She received special national awards like the MFR and the OON. She played a big role in helping market traders in Nigeria.
Her Early Life and Family
Abibatu Mogaji was born on October 16, 1916. She was born in Lagos Colony, which was then part of Southern Nigeria.
She was the mother of Bola Tinubu. He is a well-known politician and was once the governor of Lagos State. Her granddaughter, Folashade, later took over her special role as the Ìyál'ọ́jà of Nigeria.
Her Important Role as Market Leader
Before becoming the Ìyál'ọ́jà of the Association of Nigerian Market Women and Men, Chief Mogaji was a strong leader. She spoke for market women in Lagos State. She followed in the footsteps of another powerful market leader, Alimotu Pelewura.
Because of her great work in trading in Nigeria, the Nigerian government gave her special national awards. She also received honorary degrees from famous Nigerian universities. These included Ahmadu Bello University and the University of Lagos.
Her Later Life
Chief Mogaji passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2013. She was 96 years old. She died at her home in Ikeja, the capital of Lagos State. She was buried at the Ikoyi Vaults and Gardens in Lagos State.
