Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Abigail Lane (born in 1967) is an English artist. She creates art using photos, wax sculptures, prints, and sounds. Lane was one of the artists who showed their work in the 1988 Freeze exhibition. This show was organized by Damien Hirst and was very important. It helped start a famous art movement called the Young British Artists (YBA).

About Abigail Lane

Abigail Lane was born in Penzance, Cornwall. She studied art at Bristol Polytechnic and Goldsmiths College, University of London.

Her art often makes you feel like someone is missing. She uses clues and photos in her work. Lane wants you to imagine a story or event that happened. Her art can be a bit mysterious or even spooky, but it is also very interesting. Artist Tracey Emin once said, "Abigail could show the contents of her fridge and it would be fantastic." This means her art is always exciting, no matter what it is about.

Her Art and Exhibitions

Lane showed her art in the Damien Hirst-organized Freeze exhibition in 1988. Other artists like Gary Hume, Sarah Lucas, and Fiona Rae were also part of this show.

Her first solo art show was in 1992, at Karsten Schubert's gallery. One of her most famous shows was called 'Skin of Teeth'. It was held at The Institute of Contemporary Arts in 1995. Lane also had a solo show at the Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht in 1996.

Showroom Dummies Design Company

In October 2003, Abigail Lane started a design company. She worked with her friends Bob Pain and Brigitte Stepputtis. They called their company "Showroom Dummies." They made things like cushions, tiles, fabrics, blankets, and wall designs. Lane said these were 'things I would want in my own house'.
