Aboriginal Peoples Party of Canada facts for kids
The Aboriginal Peoples Party of Canada (APP) was a political party in Canada. It was started in 2005. A political party is a group of people who share similar ideas about how a country should be run. They work together to get their members elected to government.
The idea for the APP came from Myron Wolf Child, who was a student at the University of Lethbridge. The party held its first meeting on August 21, 2005, in St. Albert, Alberta. Bill Montour, a former Chief of the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario, was the party's temporary leader.
Trying to Become an Official Party
To become an official political party in Canada, a group needs a certain number of confirmed members. In October 2005, the Aboriginal Peoples Party had 122 members. This was less than half the number they needed to be officially recognized.
Around the same time, the APP tried to join with another group called the First Peoples National Party of Canada. This other group also did not have enough members to become official on its own. The First Peoples National Party of Canada did become an eligible political party on December 6, 2005. It is not clear if this happened because they merged with the APP.
If the two parties did merge, then the Aboriginal Peoples Party of Canada likely no longer exists as a separate party. However, one of the ideas for a possible merger was that the new party's name would be chosen later. So, it is possible the name "Aboriginal Peoples Party of Canada" could be used again in the future.
Leader's Plans in 2006
In 2006, Myron Wolf Child, who started the APP, announced he wanted to raise money and support. He planned to run as a candidate in the race to become the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada that year.
