About the Abraham Chavez Theatre
The theatre is named after a very important musician, Maestro Abraham Chavez. He was the main conductor for the El Paso Symphony Orchestra for many years. The building has a unique look. Its main entrance has a three-story glass lobby. This means you can see through a huge glass wall as you enter! The Chavez Theatre was built in the early 1970s. You can even see parts of it being built in the 1972 movie The Getaway.
Inside the Theatre
The lobby inside the theatre is very big, about 5,000 square feet. The stage where performers stand is also quite large, measuring 40 by 56 feet. There are 14 dressing rooms for performers to get ready. The audience sits on three different levels to watch the shows. There is also a meeting room right next to the theatre.
What Happens There?
Many different events take place at the Chavez Theatre. You can go there to see concerts by famous musicians. It also hosts exciting Broadway shows, which are plays that come from New York City. Many students have their graduation ceremonies here. The El Paso Symphony Orchestra, which Maestro Chavez used to lead, performs here regularly. Other special events also use this theatre.
Looking to the Future
By late 2016, city leaders were thinking about making the theatre the main home for the El Paso Mexican-American Cultural Center. However, the building needed many repairs because it was already about 50 years old. There have been discussions about using money that was planned for other city projects to help fix up the Chavez Theatre and other places in the city.
Famous Performers
Many well-known people have performed at the Abraham Chavez Theatre. Some of these include comedians like Gabriel Iglesias and George Lopez. Musician Joshua Ryan has also performed on its stage.
