A Life in Politics

Abraham Creighton owned a lot of land in County Fermanagh, Ireland. He also had interests in banking, which means he was involved in money and finance.

Serving in Parliament

From 1727 to 1768, Abraham Creighton was a member of the Irish House of Commons. This was like being a Member of Parliament (MP) today. He represented a place called Lifford.

In 1768, he was given a special title and became a Baron. This meant he was part of the Peerage of Ireland, a group of noble families. His new title was Baron Erne, named after Crom Castle in County Fermanagh.

Abraham Creighton passed away in June 1772. His son, John, took over his title as Baron. John later became an Earl, which is an even higher noble rank.

Control of Lifford's Seats

For a while, Abraham Creighton's family shared control of the Lifford parliamentary seats with another family, the Montgomerys. In 1727, Abraham's father, General David Creighton, made an agreement with Alexander Montgomery. They decided how they would share the two MP seats for Lifford in the Irish House of Commons.

One part of their agreement was important: if Alexander Montgomery died without a son, his share of control would go to the Creighton family.

In 1727, Abraham Creighton and his father, General David Creighton, both became MPs for Lifford. When General David Creighton died in 1728, Alexander Montgomery's nephew, Thomas Montgomery, took his place.

However, when Thomas Montgomery died in 1760, Abraham Creighton gained full control over both of Lifford's parliamentary seats. This showed how powerful and influential the Creighton family had become in the region.
